Matt Espenshade

Matt Espenshade brings more than 26 years of combined FBI and Salus experience in law enforcement, intelligence, counterterrorism, threat assessment, and complex investigations. He spent 24 years as an FBI Special Agent and leader. In his final assignment, he led the FBI's Nashville office, directing investigative, intelligence, and administrative operations across Middle Tennessee. He also served as Assistant Special Agent in Charge and, at times, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the FBI's Memphis Division.

Espenshade's career took him well beyond the United States. He served as an FBI Legal Attaché in Budapest and in Nairobi, where he worked directly with U.S. ambassadors, foreign police, intelligence services, and other government partners. His assignments included counterterrorism work in Afghanistan, the 2013 Westgate Mall terrorist attack in Nairobi, and the kidnapping of American humanitarian worker Jessica Buchanan in Somalia, who was rescued by U.S. forces after 93 days in captivity. Earlier in his career, Espenshade was a primary investigator in the 1998 bombings of the U.S. Embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, an investigation that contributed to the indictment of Osama bin Laden.

Back in the United States, Espenshade directed investigations involving terrorism, violent crime, organized crime, narcotics trafficking, civil-rights violations, sophisticated fraud, and public corruption. His work required federal, state, local, and international agencies to share intelligence and act as one team.

Before joining the FBI, Espenshade served as a U.S. Army Military Intelligence officer. His career has been recognized with the FBI Director's Award for Excellence in International Operations, a National Intelligence Meritorious Unit Citation, and the Brigadier General Richard T. Ellis Award for collaboration within the U.S. intelligence community. At Salus, he applies that experience to law enforcement, threat assessment, intelligence, stakeholder coordination, and joint investigations for domestic and international clients.
